Jobs that Make Us Unhappy or Miserable

Another quote that caught my attention from that book, this one by Faulkner. I know that some times we're limited to what jobs we can get and stuff, but a lot of times we limit ourselves. So let's quit making excuses and go after the things that we WANT to do and make us happy.

"One of the saddest things in life is that the only thing we can do for eight hours a day, day after day, is work. We can't eat for eight hours a day, nor drink for eight hours a day, nor make love for eight hours a day...all we can do for eight hours is work. Which is the reason why man makes himself and everybody else so miserable and unhappy."

Burning Bridges

I am becoming a great believer in making decisions and then burning the bridges behind so that I must follow through with my decisions.

This little book I'm reading (The Greatest Miracle in the World) mentions how Alexander the Great handled a situation like this:

"It seems that the great general was about to lead his army against a powerful foe whose men greatly outnumbered his own. Because of the odds against them, his army had shown little enthusiasm for the upcoming battle as they set sail for what they feared would be their end. When Alexander finally unloaded his men and equipment on enemy shores he issued an order for all his ships to be burned. As their means of retreat slowly sank in flames behind them Alexander rose to address his men and said, 'see your crafts going up in smoke, their ashes floating on the sea? That is our assurance that we shall be victorious for none of us can leave this despicable land unless we are victorious in battle. Men, when we go home we are going home in their ships!'"

I'm sorry, but that's just badass.

Man this is so true...

"I've invited a clarity into my life that has made things so much easier to understand and deal with. The most I'm going to say about it is that for anyone who believes that substances alien to the body and mind are helping them find some kind of inner peace or balance should at least explore the concept of the powerful human mind. It's capable of rejecting unwanted stress and negativity through introspective, reflection, and positive reinforcement. Fully knowing that this might be the cheesiest thing I could say, I've never felt so free."
